A bit of history

A brief explanation of why I'm doing this and why it's a matter of the University's history.

Blue Ridge Mountains from just south of Raphine, Virginia.

Why do I care so much? Well, the very beginning of this institution (often said near Greenville) was actually very close to the South Mountain Meeting House (Presbyterians). South Mountain Meeting House became Old Providence ARP church, which I attended for the entirety of my life before leaving Virginia. The university says near Fairfield which a long way away but.

I did a lot of research working on the sesquicentennial history of said church. James Alexander and William Graham, were mentioned often in the records that remain in the church basement.

Best I can figure, it was actually between current day Raphine and Spottswood. On the opposite hill from the hill I actually grew up on (the meeting house was on the north face of the former).

I had no idea about any of this before attending our alma mater. W&L sort of was the best accident to ever happen to me. Given the aid available, it turned out to be more affordable than UVA, JMU, and William & Mary (all state schools). It gave me the finest education I could have imagined.

But now that is threatened for other by clinging to a pollyanna past that never really existed. Reality and facts were a lot starker and damning.

Non in cautus futuri.
