Organizer Otice D. Carder, a student at the university, organized the “walkout” after proposing the name change. The board vowed to have a decision by October, he says, but it did not get back to them until December. Carder had around 300 students and staff join in the protest, which started at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23. They then held speeches in front of Lee Chapel where Robert E. Lee is buried. Six speakers shared their experiences and opinions on why the name change needed to happen now.
